Soon after 11am on Thursday 12th January a group of eleven AEC members and associates gathered near the entrance to platform 4 on Waterloo Station concourse. Once John Woods was satisfied that everyone he expected had arrived, he telephoned our host for the visit, Richard Davies, Company Operations Manager for South West Trains, to inform him that we were all present and looking forward to the tour of their Train Control Centre that he had offered us.
Our initial apprehension on being advised our tour of Northam Traincare at Southampton could not be until (as late as) 3pm was very soon allayed by first having the chance to sample the “Platform Tavern” on Town Quay for sustenance and second, after walking over to Northam, being admirably taken care of by Production Service Manager, Eddie Milligan, and both put at ease initially over a coffee in the canteen then effortlessly advised of the myriad systems in use for train maintenance.
